Biography


Praised for his 鈥渁ssured and lovely鈥 playing (Classical Voice of North Carolina), Dr. Leonardo Perez is a violinist, violist, conductor, and educator whose multifaceted career reflects a deep commitment to artistic excellence, pedagogical innovation, and community engagement. Currently, Dr. Perez is the Head of Strings and Associate Professor of Violin and Viola at 17吃瓜网在线 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Previously, he held the position of Instructor of Violin and Viola at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

An avid collaborator and chamber musician, Leonardo has made numerous appearances at concert series throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America. These include two artist residencies at The University of Iowa鈥檚 String Quartet Residency Program, and appearances at Scotia Festival鈥檚 Music Room Chamber Players, the Antigonish Performing Arts Series, the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, and Musique Royale. Previously, he was the violinist of the Litton Piano Trio at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and toured throughout the midwest as first violinist of the Voce String Quartet. Additionally, he has appeared regularly as a Next Generation Artist of the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival in Greenville, NC.聽

Equally at home in contemporary and traditional repertoire, Dr. Perez has premiered and recorded new works and collaborated with leading composers as the violinist of the New Music Ensemble in Iowa City, Iowa. His recent classical/world music album, El Maestro Nicarag眉ense, explores the music of Nicaraguan composer Luis A. Delgadillo and accompanies his dissertation of the same title, which expands the violin repertoire while highlighting Latin American musical traditions.

A passionate advocate for experiential learning, Dr. Perez is the Founder and Artistic Director of the 17吃瓜网在线 Chamber Music Residency Program. Under his direction, the program has brought internationally acclaimed artists for performances, masterclasses, mentorship, and meaningful community engagements to 17吃瓜网在线 and Nova Scotia. His programming reflects a commitment to highlighting works from a variety of global cultures and perspectives alongside traditional repertoire.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Perez teaches across all levels, from university instruction to pre-collegiate programs. He frequently serves as guest conductor, clinician, and masterclass instructor across Canada and the United States, with invitations to adjudicate competitions including Canada鈥檚 FCMF National Music Festival. His students have earned top prizes in national competitions and have been admitted to leading institutions in Canada and the United States.

Dr. Perez received his Bachelor of Music degree from East Carolina University. He holds a Master of Music (MM) degree in Violin Performance from the University of Southern California, an MM in Orchestral Conducting from East Carolina University and earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Violin Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa.

He performs on a 1989 violin by Italian maker Sergio Peresson and a bow by American maker John Norwood Lee. Outside of music, Dr. Perez is an avid tennis player and enjoys preparing Central American cuisine.
