The Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia invites members of the community to a panel discussion centred on navigating the legal system and community resources in the wake of violence victimization and loss.

This is the second of three panels supported through The Logan Alexandra Russell Fund.

Created in loving memory of Logan Alexandra Russell who was tragically killed in an act of intimate partner violence in November 2025, the Fund honours Logan’s beautiful life and loving, empathetic nature, while also striving to protect others from the violence that caused her death by contributing to intimate partner violence prevention efforts.

McInnes Cooper is pleased to partner with the Neil Squire Society, a national charity that leverages technology to foster inclusiveness for people who live with disability, to invite all first-year Schulich Law students to a volunteer event with Makers Making Change, to adapt toys for children receiving care at the IWK Health Centre.

Following the activity, students are welcome to mingle with McInnes Cooper members, enjoy some light refreshments, and learn more about the student recruitment process at the firm, as well as its Collective Social Responsibility Initiative, which includes community engagement, environmental stewardship, pro bono legal services, wellness promotion, and inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA).

Come ready to ask about:

Applications — What distinguishes a strong cover letter from a weak one? How should you present your résumé, and what is the best approach to addressing gaps in your academic or employment history?
Qualifications — Is a background in science or engineering required, or simply an advantage? How much weight is given to prior legal experience? What types of work experience should be included?
Interviews — What types of questions can you expect? Where do candidates stumble and how can you stand out?
Career building — Which courses beyond introductory IP are most valuable? What extracurriculars actually move the needle?
The finish line — Is post-interview follow-up expected? What is the best way to navigate offer-call day?
The summer student experience — What kind of work will you take on during the summer? What does a typical day in an IP practice look like?

Rule of Law Lecture: Scaling Down Democracy – Broadening Critical Thinking in Times of Decline

As part of the Law Commission of Canada's Rule of Law Lecture Series, the Schulich School of Law is hosting a panel discussion titled "Scaling Down Democracy – Broadening Critical Thinking in Times of Decline."

The idea of scaling down democracy aims to acknowledge its fragility while broadening the scope of critical thinking about its erosion. Democracy is at its lowest point in decades, with more than 70% of the world's population living under autocratic rule. Authoritarian resurgence, populism, and the erosion of trust are strongly related to structural factors like inequality, social fragmentation, disinformation, and weakened rule of law.

Rather than treating this decline as a terminal crisis, the concept of scaling down democracy invites us to focus on smaller scales of restoration – community practices, local resilience, and everyday forms of resistance – as sites where democratic values can be nurtured.

Moderated by Dr. Camilo Umaña, scientific director of the International Institute for the Sociology of Law Oñati, panelists include:

As part of its 2026-2027 Speaker Series, the Schulich School of Law's Criminal's Justice Coalition is pleased to host a viewing of the documentary My Brother, Soleiman, followed by a talk from one of its main subjects, Yusuf Faqiri.

Fagiri is the eldest brother of Soleiman Faqiri, who died after a beating by jail officers while temporarily housed at the Central East Correctional Centre in December 2016. He is the founder of the Justice for Soli movement.

2026 Smith Shield Moot

The Smith Shield Moot is a not-for-credit exhibition that sees two teams of two student advocates argue a hypothetical appeal before a panel of lawyers, judges, and members of the Weldon community.

It is the premiere mooting event of the academic calendar with a tradition dating back to 1927 and being selected to participate is a significant accolade.
