Democracy is at its lowest point in decades, with more than 70% of the world's population living under autocratic rule. Authoritarian resurgence, populism, and the erosion of trust are strongly related to structural factors like inequality, social fragmentation, disinformation, and weakened rule of law.

Rather than treating this decline as a terminal crisis, the concept of scaling down democracy invites us to focus on smaller scales of restoration – community practices, local resilience, and everyday forms of resistance – as sites where democratic values can be nurtured.

Moderated by Dr. Camilo Umaña, scientific director of the International Institute for the Sociology of Law Oñati, panelists include:

Dr. Shelly Whitman, Executive Director,
The Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security

Professor Kate Swanson, Canada Research Chair in International Peace, Security, and Children

Professor Jennifer Llewellyn, McNeil Chair in Restorative Justice, The Schulich School of Law, 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß

Speaker Series Faculty Interest Student Interest Tue, 29 Sep 2026 20:00:00 GMT /faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/09/29/guest_lecture__scaling_down_democracy___broadening_critical_thinking_in_times_of_decline_.html 2026-09-29T20:00:00Z National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – University Closed /faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/09/30/national_day_for_truth_and_reconciliation___university_closed.html
Please note that the university will be closed today in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Wed, 30 Sep 2026 03:00:00 GMT /faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/09/30/national_day_for_truth_and_reconciliation___university_closed.html 2026-09-30T03:00:00Z Last Day to Add/Drop Fall Classes Without a "W" /faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/10/07/last_day_to_add_drop_fall_classes_without_a_w.html
Please visit 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß's academic calendar for more information.
Student Interest Wed, 07 Oct 2026 12:00:00 GMT /faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/10/07/last_day_to_add_drop_fall_classes_without_a_w.html 2026-10-07T12:00:00Z Criminal Justice Coalition Speaker Series: Death in Custody /faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/10/08/criminal_justice_coalition_speaker_series_death_in_custody.html
As part of its 2026-2027 Speaker Series, the Schulich School of Law's Criminal's Justice Coalition is pleased to host a viewing of the documentary My Brother, Soleiman, followed by a talk from one of its main subjects, Yusuf Faqiri.

Fagiri is the eldest brother of Soleiman Faqiri, who died after a beating by jail officers while temporarily housed at the Central East Correctional Centre in December 2016.
