The goal of the tour is to promote the science and application of geophysics and to highlight a topic of current interest.

Abstract: This talk is meant to be accessible to undergraduates in geology, math, physics, computer science, engineering and of course geophysics and will look at questions like:

How can we safely monitor CO2 injected into the subsurface?

Machine learning in mineral exploration

Using Minecraft to learn geophysics

How do math, physics, computer science and geology connect to these problems?

Speaker: Professor Alison Malcolm is a geophysics prof in the Earth Sciences Department at Memorial University (MUN). Together with students, postdocs and other collaborators, she works to study more efficient ways to form seismic images of the subsurface and to understand how waves move through and interact with rocks. She did her BSc at the University of British Columbia and her PhD at the Colorado School of Mines. She joined MUN in 2014 as an NSERC Industrial Research Chair after six years as an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Tue, 27 Oct 2026 14:30:00 GMT /faculty/science/earth-environmental-sciences/news-events/2026/10/27/ees_departmental_seminar__geophysics__combining_technology_and_fundamental_science_to_improve_our_world.html 2026-10-27T14:30:00Z
