Many 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß traditions date back years, even decades.
The campus Mawio’mi, or pow wow, has only been an annual campus happening for three years now, but it’s built on a tradition dating back centuries, and represents one of the more colourful and vibrant days of the fall season.
The word Mawio’mi, translated from Mi’kmaq, means “gathering. It’s meant as a welcome, a means of prayer, and community event – one that’s open to everyone at Dal.
The event carries the theme “This is our way,â€ connecting with the idealism of the aboriginal community, and is sponsored by the Aboriginal Health Sciences Initiative, the 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß Native Student Association, and 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß.
There will be dancing, drumming and traditional meal, which kicks off the festivities at 11:30 a.m. That will be followed by a grand entry onto the Studley Quad at 12:45 p.m. and a flag raising shortly thereafter. For the rest of the afternoon, the quad will be filled with dance and song. (Rain location is in Studley gym.)
