Clinical Education

Successful completion of all clinical components of the program is mandatory. Clinical Practica and clinical education courses are required courses in the program of study and it is not possible to exercise the diploma exit option or receive a BHSc degree without successfully completing these courses. In addition, each of the clinical experiences is a prerequisite for further progress in the Program.

A clinical practicum course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis and course outlines provide specific information about the criteria for successful completion and opportunities for remediation. For further information, contact your professor or the Clinical Coordinator in the School of Health Sciences.

Attendance

Attendance during clinical practicum is compulsory. Students absent from scheduled clinical learning experiences for any reason will be required to make up missed time within the two (2) weeks immediately following the regularly scheduled practicum, based on site availability. Students may be required to complete this time at a different site than the clinical placement. Students unable to complete attendance requirements will not receive a passing grade.

Attendance at clinical education courses is also compulsory. Students who miss clinical time may be required to make up this time in order to meet the specific objectives. This will only be possible if opportunities exist in the regularly scheduled clinical arrangements. Otherwise students may not pass or complete the clinical education course.

Preclinical Requirements

There are several immunization and other occupational health requirements that students must submit before participating in clinical learning experiences including practicums, courses and labs.

Students can access more information on the applicable online community Brightspace page or in the Student Handbook. Students may also view frequently asked questions on our Preclinical Requirements webpage.

Clinical Placement Locations

The Faculty of Health and the School of Health Sciences maintains partnerships with clinical sites across Canada. Students in any Health Sciences program can expect to spend clinical time at sites across Atlantic Canada, and in some cases, other parts of the country, for their clinical rotations.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is clinical practicum?

Clinical Practicum takes place between May and August each year. Specific dates and timeframes vary by program and more information is shared during the first week of classes.

Can I complete all of my clinical requirements in Halifax?

No – students should be prepared to complete clinical components outside of the Halifax Regional Municipality throughout their program. Students will need to complete clinical practicums in the first, second and third year and clinical education courses in the third and fourth year at sites outside of Halifax.

Where is clinical practicum?

Clinical site options differ by program, course and year of study. The School of Health Sciences maintains clinical partnerships with hospitals and clinics across Canada. The majority of clinical site options are located throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Additional clinical placements beyond the Atlantic Region are available and included when required to accommodate learners.

Can I go to a specific site?

Placement at a specific site cannot be guaranteed for any program, course and/or year of study.

Can I request specific days/weekends off during clinical?

No – due to the number of students in each program and the challenges with scheduling clinical shifts, we cannot manage requests from students for specific days off.

I have a personal reason that may require me to be in a specific location for my clinical. Is that possible?

Students can pursue an accommodation for a specific location for their clinical through the Student Accessibility Centre. Accommodations are managed and granted by the Student Accessibility only. For more information or to book an appointment with an Accessibility Advisor for guidance, please visit their website.

Please note that this is a confidential process and students do not need to disclose their reason for pursuing an accommodation to faculty, staff or other students. If an accommodation is granted, only the accommodation requirements are shared with the appropriate contacts to ensure we can support your individual needs.

Additionally, clinical accommodations are separate from academic accommodations and all accommodations that are granted need to be renewed each academic year. Students are encouraged to reach out early to discuss their needs with an Accessibility Advisor to ensure there is time to createa a plan and support.

When will I know my Clinical Site?

Clinical Site Assignments for Clinical Practicums will be completed in the Fall semester for second- and third-year students and in the Winter Semester for first year students. More information on the Clinical Site Assignment process will be shared with all students in September.

Clinical Site Assignment timelines for third- and fourth-year Clinical Education Courses vary by program and course. More information on assignments and process is provided to students in their second year of study.
