Undergraduate BHSc Program

The School of Health Sciences offers four-year Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc)Ìýprograms in four professional disciplines:

The BHSc program offers:

  • an interprofessional approach to providing both the necessary discipline-specific content
  • an array of science and health professional learning opportunities within a university context
  • the necessary competencies to challenge professional certification examinations at the end of your program.

The overall four-year program will provide you with the opportunity to develop competencies to practice and as well to acquire additional expertise in your field along with the adaptability and leadership to contribute as part of a health care system. The program will graduate students who will be knowledgeable about the changing health care system and able to work professionally and ethically. As a graduate, you will have sufficient knowledge about research to contribute to evidence-based decisions. You will have strong communication and leadership skills and will be a life-long learner.

The BHSc programs provide an integrated class of studies including both theory and practice. There is also a post-diploma offering for practising professionals.

Program Length

The curriculum for each program is comprised of four years of full-time study with each year including core, interdisciplinary, discipline-specific, health professional and basic science classes.ÌýStudents are expected to be available for classes and labs for an average of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Additionally, students will complete clinical rotations at sites across Atlantic Canada and beyond. Clinical practica are included in each year of study, requiring a full-time commitment in the May-August time period. Students also participate in Clinical Education courses throughout their degree. Year 3 diploma exit option for Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology and Respiratory Therapy

Students in the programs of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology and Respiratory Therapy are eligible to exit the program and graduate with a diploma after successfully completing 3 years of study, or can choose to complete their 4th year and graduate with a BHSc degree.

Students in these disciplines are eligible to write their respective certification/registry exams upon successful completion of Year 3, when all requirements for a diploma exit have been met, even if they choose to complete Year 4.

Students should consult with faculty advisors concerning examination dates.

BHSc degree completion program

Diploma graduates of 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß's Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology and Respiratory Therapy programs may be eligible for the BHSc degree completion program. CompletionÌýmust occur within 6 years of the initial program start date, and requires five full credits (30 credit hours) of study.Ìý

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior university experience to apply to the BHSc program?

No. The Bachelor of Health Sciences program is direct-entry, meaning that applicants can enter directly from high school provided that they meet prerequisite requirements.

Can I take the program on a part-time basis?

No. The Bachelor of Health Sciences program is only offered on a full-time basis.

Can I work while in the program?

The Bachelor of Health Sciences program is intensive and demanding. Each student has a personal method of time management and varying priorities. 

How many students does the BHSc program accept per year?

The School of Health Sciences currently accepts 74 students each year. This is further broken down by program as:

  • Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology: 16 students
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology: 8 students
  • Radiological Technology: 26 students
  • Respiratory Therapy: 24 students

Do you give preference to Nova Scotian residents?

Yes. Enrolment in the BHSc program is limited to 74 students. The School of Health Sciences at 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß is the only school serving Atlantic Canada for many of our programs. As such, a seat purchase agreement is in place with a specified number of seats allocated annually for residents of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia. 

For incoming cohorts of 2026 and 2027, provincially purchased seat allocations are:

  • Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Technology: 1 seat for NB, 1 seat for PEI
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology: 1 seat for NB, 1 seat for NFLD, 1 seat for PEI
  • Radiological Technology: No purchased seats
  • Respiratory Therapy: 1 seat for PEI

Priority for all other seats will be given to qualified Nova Scotia residents. If seats remain, residents of other Maritime provinces, followed by residents across Canada, will be considered.

What bursaries or scholarships are available to students in the BHSc program?
