Preclinical Requirements

Students admitted to the BHSc program must complete several mandatory preclinical requirements prior to the start of their first academic year.

Students will be provided a comprehensive instruction package on all preclinical requirements, and how to submit them, upon admission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Immunizations, Serology, and CPR Certification

Which CPR course is required for the BHSc program?

Respiratory Therapy students are required to obtain certification for CPR – Basic Life
Support (BLS) Provider through the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Students in Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Radiological Technology
and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are required to have Intermediate/Standard
First Aid and Health Care Provider (HCP) or Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider CPR.

Students must maintain current certification in Intermediate/Standard First Aid and CPR HCP or CPR-BLS throughout the program.

We strongly recommend incoming students take these courses in late August or early September to avoid scheduling conflicts with future clinical practicums and renewing required certificates.

Do I need my immunization records/evidence before I start the BHSc program?

Students are expected to begin completing their preclinical requirements immediately after receiving an offer of admission into the BHSc program. Some requirements can take multiple appointments/months to finalize.

If you have been admitted to the BHSc program and expect to have delays in submitting any of the preclinical requirements, please contact Health.Sciences@dal.ca to discuss next steps.

I had TB testing done 2 years ago. Do I need to have it redone?

You will need to submit a record of a prior 2 Step TB test and a current 1 Step test.

Do I need to have both a record of my Hepatitis B vaccines and serology?

Yes, you must provide proof of immunization and serology.

What happens if I am not immune to Hep B?

Your healthcare provider will make the call on whether you need one booster or need to repeat the Hep B series.  In many cases, one booster followed by serology testing one month later establishes immunity to Hep B. Some students will have to repeat the series of vaccines and serology and this process can take up to 7-months to complete.

I need a booster and/or serology. Where do I go in Halifax to have this done?

17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß students can go to the Student Health & Wellness Clinic for support obtaining requisitions for preclinical requirements.

Is the flu and/or Covid vaccine mandatory?

The flu and Covid vaccines are strongly recommended, but not mandatory.

Please note that clinical sites may require one or both of these vaccinations, so they may be required to complete clinical placements.

Can I submit a serology report that is older than six months?

For serology records, 6 months is ideal, but they must have been done within the last 12 months.

Criminal Record Checks (CSS) and Vulnerable Sector Surveys (VSS)

The police require a letter from the school to perform the CRC/VSS. Is it possible for you to send me a letter?

Yes, please reach out to Health.Sciences@dal.ca directly to request a letter.

Can I submit CRC/VSS documents that are older than six months?

Your Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Survey need to be current (within 6 months of your start date at the School of Health Sciences).

Can my CRC/VSS be sent directly to the school?

Yes, results can be sent to Health.Sciences@dal.ca.

What if I have a positive CRC and/or VSS?

A positive CRC and/or VSS does not limit a student from being accepted into the BHSc program, however it may limit the student's ability to participate in clinical education activities and therefore complete all program requirements.
